The Piano Trio originated in 1914 in Saint-Jean-deLuz near Biarritz, not far from the composer’s native house in Ciboure. This is perhaps why it leaves the listener with the impression of the brilliant sky of the C?te d’Argent of the Basque country. Compared with the youthful and delicate String Quartet, this mature chamber work of the 39-year-old composer is far more emotional, richer in tone and dynamically more explosive.
Ravel dedicated the Trio to Andr? Gedalge, his counterpoint teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. This gesture of gratitude had a deeper meaning: Ravel composed this work in full consciousness of his powers and possibilities and, in contrast to Debussy, did not find counterpoint either repugnant or calling for reputation as is apparent from the Passacaille, the third movement of the Trio.
The musical vocabulary used by Shostakovich in the piano trio is not new to us; we have already met with it in his fifth and sixth symphonies. The old-numbered movements of the four-movement work are
lyrical in the broadest sense, while in the even-numbered movements parody and satire are used. The third movement is a great and noble song of sorrow, swelling to a moving and overwhelming breadth. In the Finale there sounds the sullen rhythm of some kind of a diabolic dance.
Shostakovich’ Trio is programme music in the sense the composer himself defined it: "I personally consider programme and content as the same thing. Without a certain thought-content, music cannot be worthwhile, live and beautiful. The composer of a symphony, a quartet or a sonata need not announce his programme; he must, hoy^yer, have it as the idea behind his work. I consider incorrect the method according to which a composer first writes music and then “recognizes” i^t content with the aid of critics and interpreters”.
Shostakovich’ Trio, Op. 67, was born out of deep and tragic war-time experiences.
